What is a payline? Picture a route drawn over the reels: a win is counted only when matching symbols sit along it, beginning on reel one. Some slots have one path, some dozens, and many modern ones drop paths altogether in favour of “ways”. Knowing which system a game uses tells you how a win is counted before you spend a peso. The other game-maths articles are on the JILIPG blog.
What Is a Payline: Lines Counted Game by Game
A line game pays only along the paths printed in its paytable. Applied to real titles, the line counts their studios publish are:
| Slot | Studio | Grid | Paylines |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crazy 777 | JILI | 3 reels | 1 |
| Money Coming | JILI | 3x3 | 1 |
| Fortune Gems | JILI | 3x3 | 5 |
| Fortune Tiger | PG Soft | 3x3 | 5 |
| Gemini Joker | Betsoft | 5 reels | 5 |
| Boxing King | JILI | 5x5 | 88 |
A one-line game like Crazy 777 puts the whole result on a single row, and this site’s game data traces most of its 3333x ceiling to the Special Wheel rather than to line wins. Boxing King spreads 88 paths over a 5x5 grid, so far more symbol patterns count.
Paylines versus ways to win
Ways to win means any matching symbol on each next reel, whatever its row, extends the win from the leftmost reel. In practice, the count grows with the grid: on a 5x4 layout, Super Ace and Mahjong Ways each reach 1,024 ways; Mega Ace reaches 46,656 on a 6x6 grid; Golden Empire’s megaways engine changes the symbol count per reel on every spin, up to 32,400 ways; and Wild Bounty Showdown uses 3,000 on its diamond-shaped grid. More ways do not mean more money. The paytable sets what each match is worth, and the studio’s RTP, where one is published, covers all of it.
JILIPG Paylines in the Lobby’s Own Games
JILIPG paylines means the line or way counts of the games the lobby actually shows. On the day this site read it, the In-House lane carried Boxing King, Money Coming, Super Ace and Golden Empire side by side, so all three counting systems share one lane:
- One line: Money Coming, whose wheel features carry most of its 10000x ceiling.
- Fixed lines: Boxing King, 88 paylines.
- Ways: Super Ace with 1024 ways, Golden Empire with 32400 megaways.
Log in through the JILIPG login screen, open In-House, and read each game’s paytable to see the lines drawn out. The JILIPG casino terms glossary defines the other words on that screen.
Red Flags to Watch For in Payline Claims
A payline claim is any promise built on the number of lines or ways. These do not hold up:
- “More lines, more wins.” A line count says how wins are counted, not how much a game returns.
- “Activate all lines to win more.” Many modern slots fix the lines, and the stake shown already covers them; read the paytable before believing a tip.
- An RTP quoted for a JILI line game. JILI publishes none, so the figure belongs to whoever printed it.
- A “winning pattern” for sale. Outcomes are settled by the game’s software at the spin, and no line pattern can be predicted.
Volatility changes how those lines feel on a budget, as slot volatility in peso terms shows, and seven checks for choosing a slot machine puts lines, volatility and max win in order.
How to Get Started
-
Open the paytable, not the artwork
In any slot, tap the info or paytable button and find the screen showing either the drawn routes or a count of ways.
-
Note lines or ways, then the stake
Write down whether the game uses fixed paylines or ways, and check whether the stake shown is per spin in total.
-
Compare like with like
Set a 1-line game against another 1-line game and a ways game against another ways game; a line count and a way count are different measures.
